7-OH and related substances

Kratom and 7-OH products are unregulated drugs sold as supplements that people buy online or in smoke shops or gas stations. Kratom’s main components, mitragynine, 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine), and related substances, are opioids.

These drugs are of growing concern due to their potential for addiction and overdose, and wide availability. On August 26, 2026, the DEA made the sale and possession of three 7-OH related compounds by the general public illegal. However, simply banning these products may have unintended consequences.

In this webinar you will learn:

  • What are kratom and 7-OH products? What are the health effects? How do they compare with other drugs?
  • What are the different reasons people use kratom and 7-OH?
  • How to talk to people about their kratom and 7-OH use and what are other options
  • Potential unintended consequences of kratom and 7-OH bans

  • Mark Duncan, MD, Associate Professor, Director, Division of Addictions, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, UW
  • Caleb Banta-Green, PhD, MPH, MSW, Director at the Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology, and Research, UW ADAI
