Kratom and 7-OH products are unregulated drugs sold as supplements that people buy online or in smoke shops or gas stations. Kratom’s main components, mitragynine, 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine), and related substances, are opioids.

These drugs are of growing concern due to their potential for addiction and overdose, and wide availability. On August 26, 2026, the DEA made the sale and possession of three 7-OH related compounds by the general public illegal. However, simply banning these products may have unintended consequences.
