New Shared Decision-Making Tools for Alcohol Use Disorder, Developed As Part of ADAI’s Work to Implement WA Senate Bill 6228
08/26/2026
ADAI is excited to share two new FREE resources to support shared decision-making for alcohol use disorder (AUD):
- A printable medications handout (pictured right) that summarizes and compares medications for AUD
- An interactive online decision aid that helps people explore treatment options based on their needs, goals, and preferences
The tools were developed through a collaboration with the UW Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute, the UW Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
Funding for the tools was provided by the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions and the Washington State Legislature as part of work related to Washington State Senate Bill (SB) 6228.
Passed in 2024, SB 6228 establishes new standards for substance use disorder treatment. The law requires behavioral health agencies treating people with alcohol or opioid use disorder to provide people with alcohol or opioid use disorder with unbiased education about all clinically appropriate medication options, including FDA-approved medications, using shared decision-making and informed consent.
The bill identifies ADAI’s new shared decision-making tools as a resource to help agencies meet the requirements.
Tools for opioid use disorder are expected later this year!
