Amanda Reiman PhD, MSW
Amanda Reiman, PhD, MSW, is a Continuing Education Specialist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services, and the Director of Training and Technical Assistance for the Center for Advancing Addiction Health Services housed in ADAI.
For twenty years prior to joining the UW team, she worked in cannabis research and policy. Her research has been focused on the impacts of changing laws on cannabis use and the use of cannabis as a substitute for alcohol and other drugs. As the Manager of Marijuana Law and Policy for the Drug Policy Alliance, she helped draft Proposition 64 to legalize cannabis for adult use in California and has consulted with multiple cities and counties on the design and implementation of local laws. She also maintains an educational platform called Personal Plants, which provides information on how to reduce the risks and increase the benefits of using cannabis.
Dr. Reiman also taught Substance Abuse Treatment at UC Berkeley for 11 years. She is passionate about ensuring that people who use drugs can get the help they need, and that services are based on public health and social work principles. She also has a background in research design and the elimination of bias in the development of assessments and the reporting of research results. In 2026 she published a textbook on Harm Reduction Approaches to Working with Adolescents Who Use Substances with co-author Barry Lessin.
