Presenter:
Annie Chen, PhD
Associate Professor
UW Department of Biomedical Informatics and Health Education

Stigma relating to substance use disorder can have negative impacts in many aspects of those affected, including but not limited to physical and mental health, employment, housing, social relationships, and reluctance to seek treatment.

Despite these consequences, questions remain concerning how stigma occurs, the mechanisms resulting in its effects, and how to measure it. However, a multi-faceted approach incorporating analytic methods and paradigms from different fields can be leveraged to enhance our understanding of stigma and its mechanisms, which in turn can inform the development of stigma reduction interventions.

In this presentation, Dr. Chen will present findings and research that illustrate how natural language processing, statistical, and qualitative data analytic methods can be leveraged synergistically to enhance our understanding of stigma within and across different data sources – social media and a cross-sectional survey using Prolific as a recruitment mechanism – and conclude with implications for intervention design.
