UW Researchers Find Clue to Preventing Addiction Relapse

A study by ADAI Director Dr. Susan Ferguson was able to control relapse to heroin use in rats by using chemogenetic receptors to act as a “light switch” on neurons in the nucleus accumbens region of the brain. This process could prevent relapse for other addictions, like compulsive gambling or overeating, which affect the same brain regions.
