Anthony S. Floyd PhD

Anthony Floyd is a Research Associate Professor, providing clinical trial, program evaluation, and regulatory expertise in the treatment and prevention of substance use disorder, in particular opioid use disorder.

Dr. Floyd is a Stanford University trained sociologist, who completed an alcohol focused NIAAA post-doc at Brown University.  He has been with the University of Washington (UW) since 2001 and has directed numerous studies in both community treatment and emergency department settings. Anthony is located in the Center for Community-Engaged Drug Education, Epidemiology and Research at the Additions, Drug & Alcohol Institute.

Early in his UW career, Dr. Floyd directed local sites in multi-site liver toxicity and dose-ranging studies of buprenorphine. More recently, Anthony led a team from Washington State in a NIDA funded multi-state, multi-site study of a pharmacy-based intervention to encourage naloxone and buprenorphine prescribing, and over the counter syringe sales for people using opioids. This study looked at the numerous facilitations (such as naloxone standing orders) and challenges (such as rurality and stigma) for pharmacy care delivery.

Dr. Floyd is an investigator on a study of a post- opioid overdose stabilization center that provides people with an alternative to emergency department admissions. He recently completed a rural needs assessment focusing on transportation concerns, including burden in reaching health care providers and pharmacies, and peer recovery support in north-central Washington. He is beginning a new study with colleagues in the School of Pharmacy testing a model of care for pharmacy-led medications for opioid use disorder prescribing.
