Empowering Perinatal Women with Opioid Use Disorders: Addressing Stigma and Judgment in Healthcare
Ekaterina Burduli, PhD
Assistant Professor, WSU
This presentation will explore the challenges and stigmas faced by pregnant women with opioid use disorder (OUD) in the United States. The discussion will highlight research done by Dr. Ekaterina Burduli with perinatal women experiencing substance use disorders (SUDs), particularly focusing on a K01 grant-funded project.
The project developed an educational intervention aimed at helping pregnant women with OUD navigate pregnancy, postpartum care, and caring for babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS).
In this session, Dr. Burduli will share key findings from interviews with women with lived experience, revealing the significant impact of stigma and judgment in healthcare settings. Dr. Burduli will also offer insights on the ongoing clinical trial testing the educational program’s effectiveness on maternal-infant outcomes and, if available, preliminary data from the study.
