Associate Professor Mary Hatch, PhD, is leading a site at ADAI for a national clinical trial investigating the use of a GLP-1/GIP drug called brenipatide for the treatment of alcohol use disorder.

The study was written up in UW Medicine News today by Brian Donohue.

The study, RENEW-ALC, is a 14-month, two-stage trial. In the first stage, all participants will receive either the GLP-1/GIP drug or a placebo. After 8 months, they’ll then be randomized again to continue with the study drug or change to placebo for another 6 months.

All participants will receive the study drug at some point, but neither they nor the researchers will know who is taking the drug and who is taking the placebo (a “double-blind” clinical trial).

We’re pleased to announce that our site has already met its target number of enrollees! The primary aim for this study is to learn whether brenipatide works better than a placebo at reducing alcohol cravings, days of high alcohol consumption, and overall drinking days.
